Saiga Saiga-12
Kalashnikov-based 12-gauge semi-automatic combat shotgun with magazine feed; military/law enforcement powerhouse ($600-$1,500+ pre-ban).
History
Saiga-12 was developed at Izhmash (now Kalashnikov Concern) in early 1990s, with production beginning 1997. Shotgun represented revolutionary approach to combat shotgun design by adapting legendary Kalashnikov rifle operating system to 12-gauge shotgun ammunition. Gave Saiga-12 same reputation for reliability and durability that made AK-47 famous worldwide. Saiga-12 is visually patterned after Kalashnikov series of assault rifles, featuring rotating bolt, gas-operated action that feeds from detachable box magazines. Design philosophy prioritized reliability under adverse conditions, making it attractive to military, law enforcement, and security forces. Shotgun incorporates adjustable two-position gas system with 'standard' and 'magnum' settings to ensure reliable cycling with both light target loads and heavy buckshot or slug ammunition. By 2011, Izhmash had been restructured and integrated into Kalashnikov Concern, which continued production without interruption. Saiga-12 has been adopted by various Russian law enforcement agencies and military units for breaching, close-quarters combat, and special operations. International military and police forces in countries including Kazakhstan, Ukraine (pre-2014), and various Middle Eastern nations also adopted platform. Import restrictions and sanctions significantly impacted availability in Western markets. 2014 US sanctions on Kalashnikov Concern effectively banned import of new Saiga-12 shotguns to United States, causing prices on existing inventory to skyrocket among collectors and enthusiasts. Based on legendary AK-47/AKM operating system. US import banned 2014 sanctions (Executive Order 13662). Pre-ban civilian models now collectible, valued $1,000-$2,500+. Magazine-fed design rare for shotguns when introduced. Used in numerous military operations and conflicts. Popular in competitive 3-gun shooting before import ban.
