History

Charles Daly and August Schoverling began importing firearms into United States around 1875 in New York City, primarily from Suhl in what was then Prussia. In 1887, Schoverling and Daly were joined by Joseph Gales, with company doing business as Schoverling, Daly, and Gales before settling on Charles Daly. Original Charles Daly died suddenly 1899, but business continued with his son, Charles Howard Daly, until 1919 when Henry Modell purchased partnership. Diamond Grade represented pinnacle of Charles Daly's imported shotguns, manufactured by prestigious German makers including Sauer and H.A. Lindner. American gun makers weren't producing many high-quality double-barrel shotguns, and Charles Daly made its reputation finding and importing best European examples for American sportsmen. In 1971, typhoon almost destroyed Miroku factory in Japan (another Daly manufacturer), and all factory records were lost, making earlier models difficult to research. Brand was sold to Outdoor Sports Headquarters Inc. (OSHI) in 1976, then changed hands several times before being acquired by Chiappa Firearms (Italian) in 2017. Lindner-manufactured guns command 20-30% premium over Sauer-made examples. Charles Daly specifically catered to American preferences while importing European craftsmanship. Brand name has survived 150 years despite multiple ownership changes.
