High Standard Flite-King
Lightweight pump-action with aluminum receiver; competed with Winchester and Remington pumps ($200-400 range historically).
History
Flite-King series pump-action shotgun produced 1954-mid 1970s, representing High Standard's most successful shotgun product line. High Standard began making shotguns for Sears Roebuck in late 1940s, but in 1960 began marketing shotguns under their own name, with Flite-King becoming flagship pump-action model. Lightweight aluminum receiver made Flite-King notably lighter than competing steel-receiver shotguns from Winchester and Remington, appealing to upland hunters and those who carried guns long distances. Major redesign occurred 1966 with introduction of K-series models (K-100, K-120, K-1200, etc.). In 1973, High Standard introduced 'Trophy Line' of shotguns, changing catalog numbers from beginning with '8' to beginning with '6'. Production facilities relocated to East Hartford, Connecticut in 1977, and High Standard ceased all shotgun production in mid-1970s due to quality control issues and intense competition, with company ultimately ceasing all operations 1984. Aluminum receiver was innovative for its time, making it lighter than competing models. Serial numbers began appearing on High Standard shotguns during mid-to-late 1967. Parts availability is now significant issue for collectors and users.
