History

Iver Johnson Hammerless Hercules Grade produced 1924-1935 during height of American double-gun manufacturing. Boxlock side-by-side featured quality construction where each barrel and lug forged as one piece then precisely joined together, representing serious craftsmanship for mid-priced American shotgun. Featured browned barrels and case-hardened receivers with attractive hunting dog etchings on left side of frame, distinguishing it from cheaper utility grades. Stock featured hand-checkered American Black Walnut for both butt stock and fore-end, premium feature at this price point. Starting 1932, Iver Johnson contracted with H.W. Cooey Machine and Arms Company of Cobourg, Ontario, where Hercules double-barrel shotguns were finished and assembled until at least 1939, representing early example of cross-border firearms manufacturing. First Iver Johnson doubles appeared around 1913-1914. Hunting dog etching made it instantly recognizable as Hercules Grade.
