History
Stevens 311 is part of distinguished family of 12-gauge double-barreled shotguns manufactured 1877-1988, spanning 111 years of American firearms history. Actual Stevens 311 designation started around 1920 when called Springfield 5000, changing to 5100 in 1931, finally renamed Stevens 311 in 1940. Utility grade shotgun without checkering or engraving found on higher-end models, featuring simple trigger for each barrel and solid boxlock construction. No-frills design made it extremely popular with farmers, ranchers, and hunters needing reliable, affordable shotgun. Model 311R (Riot version) became popular with law enforcement due to compact size and manageable recoil with 18.25" barrel. Production spanned incredible 111 years under various model names. Double barrel Stevens shotguns were date-coded 1949-1970 with small oval containing letter and number, usually found behind hinge pin or ahead of trigger guard. Became iconic 'working man's shotgun' in rural America. Despite budget status, earned reputation for reliability and durability.
