Stevens Model 520/520-30
John Browning-designed pump-action with distinctive double-hump receiver; WWI/WWII trench gun ($1,000+ for original riot configurations).
History
Stevens Model 520 first appeared in 1909 Catalog #52, becoming one of their most successful pump-action designs. Designed by legendary John Browning, it featured unique double-hump receiver making it instantly recognizable. U.S. government bought every repeating shotgun in Savage's warehouse at WWII dawn regardless of configuration. Stevens produced both Model 520A (renamed 520-30) and improved Model 620A as trench guns, riot guns, and training guns for U.S. military. Model 520 became third most widely issued trench gun of WWII. Original 520 production ended 1939, replaced by improved 520A in 1940. Total WWII military production: 33,306 Model 520-30 shotguns and 12,174 Model 620 shotguns. Heat shield on military versions featured unique pinkish anodized bayonet lug. Original WWII trench guns in excellent condition now sell for several thousand dollars. Forgeries exist due to high collector value. Shares common ancestor with Ithaca 37, both from Browning's design work.
