Smith & Wesson Model 916
S&W's first shotgun, a pump-action based on Noble patents with troubled reliability history.
History
Introduced in 1972 as Smith & Wesson's first shotgun, based on Noble Model 66 patents. Offered in sportsman version (916), takedown version (916T), and tactical version (916A). Unfortunately plagued by quality issues including safety recalls for barrel ruptures in the 916T model. Production ended after only 8 years (1972-1980) due to reliability problems. Represents S&W's difficult entry into the shotgun market and lessons learned about manufacturing outside their core expertise.
