Just bought my first shotgun - what's a good practice routine for a total beginner?

I picked up a used Remington 870 Express 12-gauge with a modified choke. I've been to the range twice and can hit maybe half the clays at 25 yards. I'm using Federal Top Gun 7.5 shot loads. Should I just keep blasting away or is there a smarter way to practice?

Welcome to the sport! Starting with an 870 is solid - that gun will last you forever. Instead of just shooting randomly, try this: focus on your mount and stance first. Have someone watch you mount the gun to your shoulder - a lot of misses come from inconsistent mounting. Then practice tracking the clay with your eyes first, then bring the gun up smoothly. Start with simple straight-aways before trying crossing shots. What's your local range like - do they have a dedicated beginner's area or instruction?
