Struggling with consistent lead on crossing targets at 35 yards

Been shooting about 2 years, mostly sporting clays. I'm using a Browning Citori 725 with a Modified choke and 1-1/8 oz #8 loads at 1200 fps. On station 8 at my local club, which is a true crossing pair at about 35 yards, I keep hitting behind. I've tried sustained lead but can't seem to get the distance right consistently.

That's a tough station! At 35 yards, you're looking at about 4-5 feet of lead with #8 shot. The sustained lead method is solid, but on true crossers I find it helps to focus on the target's speed rather than trying to measure exact distance. Try this: pick up the target early, match its speed with your gun, then push just a touch ahead and shoot without stopping your swing. Are you keeping both eyes open? Sometimes closing one eye can mess with your depth perception on longer crossers.
