First time pheasant hunter - what's a good all-around load?

Just got my license and a used Beretta A300. Heading to South Dakota for a guided hunt this fall. I've been practicing with target loads, but the guide said to bring my own ammo for pheasants. Looking at the shelves, I'm overwhelmed - #4, #5, #6 shot, different velocities... what should I grab for a beginner?

Great question, and welcome to the sport! For pheasants over pointing dogs, you can't go wrong with a standard 1-1/8 oz load of #5 or #6 shot at around 1200-1300 fps. Federal Premium or Winchester Super-X in 2-3/4" are solid, affordable choices that pattern well in most guns. I'd lean toward #6 if the birds are holding tight for the dog, #5 if they're flushing wild at 30+ yards. Start with a Modified choke - it's forgiving. What choke are you running in that A300?
