Best choke for late-season pheasants?

I've been using a Modified choke in my Beretta A400 Xtreme Plus for pheasants this season, but now that it's late season and the birds are flushing wild at 40+ yards, I'm getting a lot of cripples. I'm shooting Federal Premium 3" #5 shot at 1,350 fps. Should I switch to Full or stick with Modified and just get closer?

Late-season roosters are tough! I'd definitely switch to a Full choke for those longer shots - I use a Briley extended Full in my Browning Citori for exactly this situation. Your Federal #5s are a good choice, but consider stepping up to #4 shot if you're consistently at 40+ yards. The denser pattern from the Full choke with slightly larger shot will anchor them better. Have you tried patterning your gun with both chokes at 40 yards to see the difference?
