Looking for a good all-around upland load for my Beretta A400 Xcel
Been hunting pheasant and grouse for about two seasons now with my 12ga A400. I've been using whatever target loads were on sale, mostly 7.5 shot, but I feel like I'm missing opportunities at longer flushes. I'm using a Modified choke. Should I stick with 7.5, or is stepping up to 6s or 5s worth it for those 30-40 yard shots?

Good question. For pheasant and grouse, especially at those ranges, I'd definitely move away from target loads. I've had great luck with Federal Premium Upland loads in #6 shot. They're 1 1/4 oz at around 1300 fps. With your Modified choke, that combo should give you a nice, dense pattern out to 40 yards without being too tight for closer shots. The #6 shot carries more energy than 7.5s for cleaner kills on bigger birds like roosters. Have you patterned your gun with different loads yet? That's the best way to see what works for your specific setup.
