Best choke/load combo for late-season pheasants?

Been hunting pheasants for two seasons now, mostly on public land. My go-to has been my Beretta A300 with a Modified choke and Federal 3" #5s. Early season it's fine, but now that the birds are wilder and flushing at 40+ yards, I'm getting a lot of cripples. Anyone have a better setup for these longer shots?

Late season roosters are tough! I'd suggest tightening up your choke first. Try a Full or even an Extra Full if your gun patterns it well. For loads, I've had great luck with Hevi-Shot's "Hevi-Pheasant" in #4 or #5. The denser shot holds energy better at distance. What's your A300 chambered for? If it's 3.5", you could also try a 3.5" load for a denser pattern at the edge of your range.
