Best choke for late-season pheasants?

I've been using a modified choke in my Beretta A400 Xtreme Plus for pheasants this season, but now that the birds are wilder and flushing farther out, I'm not getting clean kills. I'm shooting Federal Premium 3" #5 shot at about 35-40 yards. Should I switch to full choke or just aim better?

Late-season roosters definitely make you earn it! I'd stick with modified choke - full can get too tight and actually reduce your pattern at those ranges if you're not dead-on. Try stepping up to #4 shot instead; it carries more energy for those longer shots. Also check your velocity - if you're using standard 1200fps loads, maybe switch to something like Federal's Heavyweight TSS at 1300fps. What's your typical shot distance when they flush?
