First time pheasant hunting this weekend - what choke and load should I use?
Just got my hunting license and I'm heading out with some buddies for pheasant this weekend. I've got a Beretta A300 with the factory chokes (IC, M, F). I've been practicing with target loads but not sure what to bring for the actual hunt. Birds will be flushing from CRP grass, probably 20-30 yards out.

For pheasant over pointing dogs in that kind of cover, I'd start with Modified choke and Federal Premium 2¾" 1¼oz #5 or #6 shot. That combo gives you a good pattern density at those ranges without being too tight. The factory Modified in your A300 should work great - just pattern it first if you can. What shells have you been able to find locally? Sometimes availability dictates what you end up using.
