Looking for a good all-around upland load for my Beretta A400 Xcel

I've been hunting pheasant and grouse for a couple seasons now with my Beretta A400 Xcel, mostly using whatever 12ga target loads were on sale. I'm getting better at hitting birds, but I feel like I'm leaving some cripples behind at 30-40 yards. I'm using an Improved Cylinder choke. What's a good, versatile load I should try that will give me better patterns without beating me up?

Good question - that A400 is a sweet gun! For pheasant and grouse, I'd recommend stepping up to a 1-1/8 oz load of #6 shot. Federal's Prairie Storm or Winchester's Super Pheasant in 2-3/4" are both excellent choices that pattern really well through IC chokes. They'll give you the density you need at those 40-yard shots without excessive recoil. Have you tried switching to Modified choke for those longer shots? Might help tighten things up a bit.
