Q&A / Trap

Just started American Trap - how much lead should I be giving these targets?

I'm brand new to trap shooting and just joined a local club. I'm shooting a Beretta A300 with a Modified choke, using Federal Top Gun 1-1/8oz #8 loads at 1200fps. I keep missing behind the birds, especially on stations 3, 4, and 5. I've tried swinging through and pulling the trigger when I see daylight between the bead and target, but I'm still hitting air.

Welcome to the sport! That's a classic beginner issue - I did the same thing when I started. With American trap targets moving at around 42mph, you're probably looking at 2-3 feet of lead on those left and right stations. Try this: pick a spot about 3 feet in front of the target and focus on that spot, not the clay itself. Your Beretta with Modified choke is perfect for 16-yard, and those Federal loads are solid. Are you keeping your head down on the stock and following through after the shot? That follow-through is key - don't stop your swing when you pull the trigger.
